Puebla

On the way to the fourth biggest city in Mexico, we took a shortcut. A gravel road up to 2800m crossing the hilly backcountry. The landscape was impressive. In Puebla itself we recognized the VW logo on the street signs and people wearing Bosch or Audi T-Shirts. The Germans left tracks. So VW is one of the biggest employer in this area. The famous VW Beetle was manufactured until 2003. Also we found a ‘Paulaner’ pub. It was not that inviting so we skipped it. Maybe if they had German food also… like “Weisswürschde”, :-). Puebla is famous for lots of churches in town. The locals told us for every day another one. From small ones, with only a couple of seats up to the big cathedral with a huge golden altar and a big organ. At all there are a lots of nice old buildings within the center. Before entering I got lots of flats. Small peaces of wire from old tires working through the rubber. The Continentals are done, the third ones since San Francisco. It was impossible to find good tires with kevlar. Its like always here in Mexico. Take what you can get and try to come through. We’ll see how long it works – with the cheap $8 tire. In Puebla is also the origin for the Mexican national holiday, ‘cinco de Mayo’. The 5. May. Its a celebration for a battle agains the Frenchs, back in the 19th century. For us it was also a fight on this day to come out of town. The roads were closed with peoples everywhere. So we took a big detour for leaving. But at the end we got some Tequila at 10h. The locals were wishing us ‘salut’ and good luck! So let’s go!
